About Adnan Tanguler

I was born in Urgup, Cappadocia, in 1970. I completed primary and secondary school in Urgup and went to Hacettepe University in Ankara for my BA in English Language Teaching. I did my Master's there, too, but in Tourism Business and Administration, and my thesis is on tour guiding. I was an English teacher in a school for a year before joining Erciyes University's Department of Professional Tourist Guiding, where I taught advanced and vocational English for 8 years.

I have worked as a tour guide since 1986, and gained my guiding license in 1991. I have worked for many well-known travel companies such as Cappadocia Tours, ITS, PeTour, Argeus, Setour and Credo Tours, either as a full-time or free-lance guide. I prefer working independently as a professional freelancer because this gives me more freedom and flexibility, and I don't have to do anything ... insensible!

This is the house where I was born. It has belonged to my father's family for generations, but as you can see is in need of a little restoration! In the old days, there were many houses like this in Urgup and the surrounding region. A few families still live in houses like this, but most moved out because, as you can see, erosion took its toll. Many of these cave houses have recently been converted into cave hotels with luxury facilities, and one day I hope to have a cave hotel of my own. Perhaps I will be able to convert my family home, and hold on to my family heritage.

This is me with my Dad. I treated him to a balloon trip the other year and he enjoyed every minute. He was born and bred in Urgup, but had never had such a bird's eye view of the countryside he worked in all his life. Once we had landed he disappeared and I found him working with the crew laying out the balloon and packing it up!

My father passed away on 22nd August 2004. I miss him very much. May God rest his soul.

This is me with my Mum in her garden where she grows salad vegetables and fruit trees as well as roses and other flowers. As you can see, she wears traditional Turkish clothes. Her headscarf is trimmed with beads and she wears shalvar, special baggy trousers that are more comfortable and practical than long skirts. Isn't she great?

One of the things I love to do in my spare time is to explore the hidden, off-the-road places of interest wherever I go. I study a good local map and keep an eye out for sign posts as well as follow my nose! I always stop and asking the locals if there are any historical remains in the area. These people often know more than any map or book. The price for seeing this Hittite relief of the Storm God, which incidentally was in a small enclosed area with lots of goats, was to take everyone's photo and send it to them! They were very hospitable and wouldn't let me leave without buying me a drink.

Another place I happened to come across, which still leaves me astounded, is a village with so many Roman remains that people have used the pillars in the construction of their houses. I even found one house with the ruins of a Roman temple in the garden. Unbelievable! Unfortunately it's so far off the road that very few tourists ever get to see it.

Well, that's enough about me.
