Turkish Bath

Where can you see the biggest, hottest belly button in the world? In a Turkish bath, of course!! The belly button stone is the circular heated marble slab that forms the focal point of the traditional Turkish bath. When you first enter a Turkish bath, you are given takunya (special shoes to wear), a box for your valuables, a peshtemal (thin cloth to wrap around you), and then shown into a private cubicle to change. You should either keep your underwear on (bring spares) or wear your swimming gear. You then hand over your locked box of valuables and enter the sauna.

The whole experience starts with a 15-minute hot sauna (if you can take it) followed by cold dip, then 15-20 minutes relaxation on the hot belly-button stone. At this point you will be called into another room where you will lie on a bench while your dead skin is removed with a special mitten prior to a wonderful Turkish massage. After this, you go into a side room of the main bath where you discreetly wash your private parts (you may wish to bring your own soap). Finally, you reclaim your box of valuables, get changed and go to the lobby where you may be offered drinks and serenaded by a saz (Turkish lute) and dumbelek (small drum).

All baths traditionally have separate times for men and women, but the bath in Avanos caters for groups of mixed tourists providing a reservation is made.
