Bird Watching in Cappadocia

Sultan Sazligi Wetlands Day Trip

Anatolia is situated on both the N-S and E-W migration routes, and two wetland areas in Cappadocia are Bird Paradises, attracting 350 different and sometimes rare species of birds over the year. Lake Keyfe lies in the north of Cappadocia and Sultan Sazligi, which means The Sultan’s Reedbeds, is in the east. The latter has a beautiful view of the now extinct volcano Mount Erciyes (3,916m), and visitors are taken on jeeps and in small boats to get the best views. Birdwatchers and non-specialist nature-lovers alike will be amazed at the range and number of water birds, up to 50,000 flamingos alone! Such trips require an early reservation.

The main breeding species include: Greater Flamingo, Spoonbill, White Pelican, Glossy Ibis, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Great White Egret, Cattle Egret, Squacco Heron, Night Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Red-throated Diver, Pygmy Cormorant, Little Bittern, Stork, Greylag Goose, Shelduck, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Teal, Mallard, Pintail, Garganey, Pochard, Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous Duck, Little Crake, Corncrake, Moorhen, Coot, Crane, Oystercatcher, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet, Stone Curlew, Pratincole, Woodcock, Redshank, Black-headed Gull, Slender-billed Gull, Gull-billed Tern, Common Tern, Whiskered Tern, Little Tern, White-winged Black Tern and, in the barren areas, Sandgrouse.

Cappadocia is generally a wonderful area for those interested in bird watching. The birds I’ve seen include: Long-Legged Buzzards, White and Black Storks, Egyptian Vultures, Chukars, Golden Orioles, Hoopoes, Syrian Woodpeckers, Bee Eaters, Calandra Larks, Alpine Swifts, Rose-Colored Starlings, Rock Thrushes, Blue Rock Thrushes, Scops Owls, Nightingales, Cetti’s Warblers, Rock Nuthatches and Rock Sparrows.
